CNY Earth Science Student Symposium

Our symposium will be on Friday April 11th, 2014!

 The abstract submission deadline for this year's symposium is April 1st 2014! We hope you will consider joining us this April! 
  • All Earth Science (and related subjects) undergraduate and graduate students from any college or university in the CNY area are invited to submit an abstract to present a poster at our symposium. All abstracts must have a student as the first author and must address original research conducted by the first-author student.  Please email your abstract submissions to Robin Drucker at rndrucke@syr.edu by April 1st 2014 (250 word limit). 
  • Submission is FREE! (Upon your submission, you give the Syracuse University Geology Club permission to reproduce your abstract for the purposes of dissemination among symposium attendees) 
  • Maximum poster dimensions should be no more than 36"x 58"

Location Information

The Symposium is held in and around Heroy Geology Laboratory on Syracuse University's campus with the exception of the Lava Pour, which is held at the ComArt Building on Comstock Ave. near South Campus. For participants joining us from other colleges and universities, you are welcome to park in the Stadium Garage, just west of Heroy Geology Lab and the Carrier Dome. Schedule for 2014 Symposium

Symposium Schedule 2014:

Thursday April 10th Pre-Symposium Lecture and Reception 

  • Prof. Jim McNamara, from Boise State will be giving a lecture entitled "Complexities and Challenges in the Hydrology of Snowy Places." The lecture will be at 2pm in 369 Link Hall 
  • The Water Initiative will host a happy hour at Fagan's follwing Jim's lecture from ~3:30pm to 5pm

Friday April 11th 

  • 9-9:30; Arrive and sign in, coffee and breakfast 
  • 9:30-11; Morning poster Session 
  • 11:15-12:15; Lecture by Dr Dustin Trail from University of Rochester at the Gifford Auditorium, "What can zircons tell us about the early Earth?" 
  • 12:30-2:00; Lunch, career fair with industry sponsors
  • 2:00-3:30; Afternoon Poster Session 
  • 3:30-4:00; Coffee break/announce winners/more career fair
  • 4:00-5:00; Lecture Dr Peter deMenocal from Columbia at the Heroy Auditorium, "The mid-Holocene emergence of the Saharan Desert and its cultural impacts." 
  • 5:30-6:30; Lava pour at the Comstock Art Building
  • 6:30 -9:00; Reception at Beer Belly Deli on Westcott St.

Geology Photo Contest

This year we are excited to add a Geology Photo Contest to our symposium. Any student or faculty attendee is welcome to submit a photo for general audience judging. Photos must have subject matter with a geological theme (people, animals, or manmade structures must not be the main focus, but inclusion for scale is acceptable). Please submit your photo as a .jpg file no larger than 6MB to sugeoclub@gmail.com. Please include your name and school in the email. Only 1 entry per person allowed. You do not have to be presenting a poster to submit a photo. Please submit your photo by April 1st, 2014.
